Dr. Schumacher:  

  • Is Board Certified in Foot Surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery (ABPS), and holder of "Diplomate" status with that organization. 

  • Is Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine (ABPOPPM), and holder of "Diplomate" status with that organization.

  • Is a Fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Orthopedics and Medicine (ACFAOM).

  • Completed undergraduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in Zoology with an emphasis in Genetics and Genetic Research.  

  • Completed his Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine (DPM) at the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine.  Scholl College is one college within the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago, Illinois.  Clinical rotations included stints at major hospitals throughout the Chicago area.

  • Did his post-graduate training at the Ambulatory Foot Clinic of South Bend, Indiana and at the Hospital Podiatry Group Surgical training program at Vancouver General Hospital.  

  • Is a Clinical Instructor of the Podiatric Surgical Residency Program at Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre Hospital / University of British Columbia--the only program of its kind in Canada.  

  • Is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA).

  • Is a member of the Canadian Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA).

  • Is a member of the British Columbia Association of Podiatrists (BCAP).

  • Is Certified in Ultrasonography.

  • Is the most-experienced practitioner of the piezoelectric form of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in western Canada. 

  • Is a member of the International Society for Musculoskeletal Shockwave Therapy, the premier organization of its type in the world.

  • Speaks English and Spanish. 

  • Is Licensed in British Columbia, Wisconsin, and Washington State.

  • Has served in numerous administrative positions in the podiatric medical field, at both the provincial and federal level.

What do all those letters following Dr. Schumacher's name mean?

You may see several sets of letters following Dr. Schumacher's name: 

B.Sc. D.P.M., D.A.B.P.S., D.A.B.P.O.P.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S., F.A.C.F.A.O.M.  

"B.Sc.", known as a "B.S." degree in the U.S., stands for a Bachelor of Science.  This was Dr. Schumacher's first degree achieved in biological science. 

"D.P.M." refers to the professional degree "Doctor of Podiatric Medicine".  This is the degree that allows someone to practice podiatric medicine and surgery. 

The letters "D.A.B.P.S.", which sometimes follow Dr. Schumacher's name, mean that Dr. Schumacher is Board Certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgeons, and holder of Diplomate status within that organization. 

The letters "D.A.B.P.O.P.P.M.", which also occasionally follow Dr. Schumacher's name, mean that Dr. Schumacher is Board Certified by the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine, and holder of Diplomate status within that organization.  

The letters "F.A.C.F.A.S." mean that he is a "Fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons".  The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons is a professional organization associated with an interest, training,  board certification, and education in the specialty of foot and ankle surgery.  

The letters "F.A.C.F.A.O.M." mean that Dr. Schumacher is a "Fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Orthopedics* and Medicine".  The American College of Foot and Ankle Orthopedics and Medicine is a professional organization associated with an interest, training,  board certification, and education in the specialty of podiatric orthopedics (concerning fields of study such as biomechanics and foot and ankle function, trauma management, etc.) and general podiatric medicine (concerning general podiatric medicine topics like diabetes, infection, and other medical management of foot and ankle issues).
