Where is Dr. Schumacher from?

Dr. Schumacher was born in Chicago, Illinois.  He grew up in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Where was Dr. Schumacher educated?

Dr. Schumacher attended the University of Wisconsin (two photos below), where he majored in zoology with an emphasis in cellular biology and genetics.  Dr. Schumacher was involved in genetic research in the field of segregation distortion.   

Where did Dr. Schumacher get his medical training?

Dr. Schumacher's graduate work in podiatric medicine was done in Chicago (below left) at the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, or SCPM.  Scholl College is now part of the  Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (below right)--a unique school devoted exclusively to medical and medical science studies at the graduate-level (Master's, PhD, MD, and DPM degrees).

During his his medical education, Dr. Schumacher trained at:

  • Cook County Hospital, Chicago (the old hospital, right):  Cook County is one of the largest and busiest hospitals in the world, and is well known as the hospital portrayed in the television series E.R..

  • Northwestern University Hospital, Chicago:  The downtown Chicago teaching complex is one of the nation's best medical schools.

  • University of Chicago Hospital, Chicago:  Located in the Hyde Park area on the south side, the University of Chicago is one of the top research hospitals in the world.

  • Henrotin Hospital, Chicago:  Now closed, Henrotin served the citizens of the gold coast area of Chicago for years.

  • St. Mary's Hospital, Chicago:  Located west of Chicago's downtown area, St. Mary's served as as Dr. Schumacher's emergency room rotation.

  • Oak Forest Hospital, Oak Forest, IL:  Huge and sprawling, Oak Forest Hospital is located in a southern suburb of Chicago

  • Wood Memorial V.A. Hospital, Milwaukee, WI:  Wood VA Hospital specializes in unique medical care needs of America's veterans.

  • A variety of private offices and clinics in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Washington State, California, and British Columbia. 

Where did Dr. Schumacher do his post-graduate training?

Dr. Schumacher did the first part of his post-graduate training at the Ambulatory Foot and Ankle Clinic of South Bend, Indiana, an institution specializing in minimal-incision surgical techniques. 

From there, Dr. Schumacher moved to Vancouver to complete his training in podiatric medicine and surgery with the Hospital Podiatry Group of the Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre (VHHSC).  The VHHSC is pictured to the right.

The VHHSC is the second largest medical complex in Canada and one of the leading health care centres in North America.

 How long has Dr. Schumacher been in practice?

Dr. Schumacher received his doctorate in podiatric medicine in 1987, then began his post-graduate work.  He's been practicing in Surrey since January of 1991. 

Does Dr. Schumacher have any areas of specialization?

Dr. Schumacher has a general podiatric practice, seeing all manner of lower extremity complaints.  However, Dr. Schumacher has four main areas of specialization.

  1. Foot surgery:  Dr. Schumacher is board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and holder of Diplomate Status with that organization (DABPS). He is also a Fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (FACFAS).

  2. Biomechanics and foot function:  Dr. Schumacher assesses mechanical function of the foot and designs and builds orthotics, braces, and other appliances to correct or control structural and mechanical abnormalities.  Dr. Schumacher is board certified in foot and ankle orthopedics by the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine and holder of Diplomate status with that organization (DABPOPPM). He is also a Fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Orthopedics and Medicine (FACFAOM).

  3. Heel Pain:  Dr. Schumacher's commitment to recalcitrant heel pain is so strong that he's opened a heel pain specialty clinic.  Feel free to visit our website, www.heelpain.ca for more information.

  4.   • Is Board Certified in Foot and Ankle Orthopedics by the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine and holder of Diplomate Status with that organization (DABPOPPM). 

(Less than 1% of foot specialists in Canada are board certified by both the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine.)

  • Is a Fellow in the American College of Foot and Ankle Orthopedics and Medicine (FACFAOM). 

  • Is a Clinical Instructor of the Surgical Residency Program at Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre / University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia.

  • Is a member of the International Society of Musculoskeletal Shockwave Therapy (ISMST) based in Vienna, Austria.
