Ankle Foot Orthoses
AFOs

ankle foot orthosis

Ankle Foot Orthoses, or AFO's, are L-shaped devices that run from the back of the leg to the bottom of the foot.  There are several types, including a rigid, non-bendable, type, a hinged type that allows for the bending at the ankle, and the Richie Brace--a combination AFO and orthosis.

There are some over-the-counter AFO's, though most patients require a custom-made appliance.  Appliances such as the AFO or Richie Brace are one of Dr. Schumacher's specialties.

Typical uses are for patients with a "drop foot", or the inability to bend the foot upwards at the ankle, posterior tibial dysfunction, or for various neuromuscular diseases.

In many cases extended medical benefits, social services, Indian Affairs, DVA, WCB, ICBC, RCMP or other agencies may cover the costs of these devices.  In many cases extended medical benefits, social services, Indian Affairs, DVA, WCB, ICBC, RCMP or other agencies may cover the costs of these devices.
